Learning Pathway: ICT planning in schools


This module focuses on formulating and implementing practical plans around ICT usage in the school. You will consider the practical aspects of selecting realistic priority areas, planning and budgeting in order to introduce or enhance the successful use of computers in relevant aspects of your school system.
In this activity you identify the phase of ICT use that your school is currently in. You then start thinking of ways in which ICTs have been or can be used in your school.

Activity 1A
Where is your school in this world of technology?

This activity enables you to further practise using e-mail and word-processing using a school letterhead. The purpose of this activity is to reflect on the ways ICTs can be effectively used in all aspects of a school.

Motivating for ICT use in a letter to parents
The purpose of this activity is to alert you to issues that should be included in your school's ICT Policy.

Having introduced you to some very simple examples of school ICT policies, we focus on the importance of a broader vision
Activity 2B
A vision for ICT school policy
While vision can be very inspiring, it is important to consider the realities of your school and ensure that your ICT policy is focused on achieving the vision at your school.

Your school's ICT Policy
2D is an optional activity. It allows you to look at other schools' policies that can help to shape your own. You may get ideas about what you could be doing in your school and what elements you should include in school ICT policy.

The purpose of Activity 3 as a whole is to assist you to begin planning for ICTs in your school. In the first activity, 3A you are going to go through three steps of planning with specific reference to ICTs.
Activity 3A
Planning for ICTs in your school
In this activity you will conduct a general swot analysis on your own school as well as looking at swot analyses done at other schools and making comparisons.
Activity 3B
General SWOT analysis of your school
This activity requires you to conduct a swot analysis purely on ICT strenghs and weaknesses of your school.
Activity 3C
An ICT-specific SWOT analysis of the school
For the remainder of the activities you will choose two particular areas of focus, from a) Curriculum b) staff development and c) infrastructure and security.
Activity 4
Choosing focus areas
This activity has been developed in such a way that it will introduce you to the issues around integrating ICTs in the curriculum. There are four tasks in this activity that are compulsory. They are concerned with the impact that ICTs can make on teaching and learning and how this can be achieved.
Activity 4A
ICT and curriculum
The second focus area is staff development and this activity has five tasks that are compulsory. They are concerned with overcoming potential barriers you may encounter as well as providing ideas for successful staff development with ICTs.
Activity 4B
ICT and staff development
This activity is intended to help you to identify proper security measures for ICT usage. You will consider issues that deal with different security measures for schools with ICTs and you will be given the opportunity to learn what other schools have done to safeguard their equipment.
Activity 4C
ICT and security
In this activity, you continue to focus on your areas of priority. You will draft a school ICT policy that will enhance the implementation of ICT in your chosen focus areas at your school.
Activity 5
ICT and policy
It is now time to consolidate previous activities into a clear plan. This activity provides some indicators for success.
Activity 6
Plan of action
This activity aims to equip you with skills and information on how to budget for the ICT facility at your school.
Activity 7A
Budgeting
This activity is intended to equip you with skills and information on how to identify fundraising activities, how to write proposals to donor agencies for funding and how to draft a press release.
