Learning Pathway: ICT Leadership in Schools

The purpose of this module is to explore the important role that leadership plays in introducing and enhancing ICT use at schools. It will also raise awareness of the role that ICT can play in effecting change.

In this activity you will explore various concepts around the demands that are made of leaders in this age of rapid and complex change. You will explore some of the qualities and capabilities of a good leader and conduct a self evaluation.

Activity 1
Leadership in the
digital age

The purpose of this activity is to give you the opportunity to role play a range of problems that commonly occur in schools and to reflect on possible solutions.

Activity 2
Schools scenarios

In this activity you will explore all aspects of the school which you will, as a leader, need to lead and manage. Through the activity you will evaluate the current state of your own school.

Activity 3
Thinking about the whole school

In this activity, you will consider your role as a leader in promoting your school's vision for ICT integration and find out what ICTs can and can't do to help you achieve this. There are a number of valuable readings on leadership included in this activity.

Activity 4
Whole school conditions for ICT integration

In this activity case studies of schools elsewhere in your country or abroad will assist you to develop a vision for your own school and what it might begin to look like with ICTs integrated into every aspect of the school.

Activity 5
Learning communities: Exploring ICT integration lessons from other schools

Central to this activity is the idea that integrating and adopting ICTs is a process that is accomplished in phases. The world-renowned STaR (School Technology and Readiness) chart is linked from this activity.

Activity 6
Models and stages of technology change

The purpose of this activity is to give you some food for thought about leadership and its role and purpose, building further on the ideas from activity 4.

Activity 7
The importance of vision and the clarifying role of a leader

In this activity you examine how the introduction of ICTs at the school, in an integrated way, will impact on teaching and learning in each learning area.

Activity 8
Teaching and learning
at the school

As a school leader (and/or ICT champion) you are now required to set up a meeting with members of your school in order to motivate for and create a shared vision that will allow for the introduction of ICTs at your school.

Activity 9
Creating a shared vision for your school towards ICT integration

This activity focuses on some practical aspects of how your new vision for the school can be realised.

Activity 10
New partnerships to achieve the shared vision

The final activity gives you the opportunity to reflect on the activities and exercises in the module and to review your progress and consider your development since you started the module.
