Activity 3: Thinking about the whole school

Interact with diagram: 30 mins
Writing in your portfolio: 1 hr
Creating presentation: 1 hr
Discussion with group: 30 mins

3 hrs

In this activity you will explore all aspects of the school which you will, as a leader, need to lead and manage. Through the activity you will evaluate the various areas of the school.

Your evaluation is an `As Is' one. Think about where the school is now. As a leader, you won't be able to take the school further unless you know where you are now.

This interactive activity is fun but at the same time its underlying focus is more involved.

Activity

  1. Examine this whole school diagram. This diagram helps you to see the whole school in its context. Within the school, a leader must lead, manage, co-ordinate and balance the demands of various aspects such as staff development, partnerships, etc. Experiment with dragging and dropping - placing the apples according to red=good quality, green=almost good quality and brown=poor quality. You may want to print out a copy of your assessment.

  2. Do an overview and assess how ICT integration will affect each of these areas of the school.

  3. Write notes to yourself on your present assessment of your school in the e-diary. You might want to comment on those aspects of the school that you rated highly and/or those that will require your sustained attention to bring up to scratch.
  • For your areas of focus, what is your vision?
  • How will ICT integration change the way things are being done?
You might also want to share any success stories you have.
  • Perhaps certain educators showed initiative at your school by learning new ICT skills and you supported them in a particular way.
  • How can other leaders in your group learn from your example?
  1. Send the comments you made in your e-diary as an attachment in email to your tutor (using the subject heading "Thinking about the whole school").

  2. Select one aspect of the school that will change as a result of ICT integration. Create at least three slides outlining what your vision is for your chosen aspect. Save the presentation file as Vision.
If you need help on how to create a presentation the following tipsheets may be useful:

Keep your power-point slide handy in preparation for a later presentation to the school for creating a shared vision.

  1. Share the presentation document with your group online. Comment on the slides of at least two other members in your group. Keep your slides handy for your presentation to the school.
