Learning Pathway: Choosing and evaluating software

Introduction

The purpose of this activity is to give you a chance to experience educational software and to reflect on the different types and their uses.
Activity 1
Experiencing educational software
This activity helps you to establish a framework of criteria to guide your evaluations.
Activity 2
Choosing appropriate evaluation criteria
In this activity you explore how other teachers around the world have evaluated software and we try to learn from their experiences. The purpose of educational software is explored.
Activity 3
Exploring other educators' software reviews
In this activity, you finalise your evaluation criteria which will give you an authentic tool to use when you have to review your own choice of software products in the next few activities.
Activity 4
Finalising your criteria for review of software
The next three activities are linked.
In Activity 5 you will identify and then “scan” or briefly read about several products to find ones that you would like to review. A list of available software is part of this module.
Activity 5
Choosing software to review
In Activity 6, you will use the criteria you have developed to analyse and formally review two different software products
Activity 6
Reviewing one software product
You now have a choice between Activity 7 – using one of the software products with your class and reviewing it and Activity 8 – developing software review guidelines for your school to use when buying software.
Activity 7
Reviewing a product used with a class
These steps will help you put into practice the theory you have learnt in the first half of the module.
