reading background info: 2 hrs

completing the e-diary: 30 mins

4 hrs 30 mins

Reflecting on the experience

The purpose of this activity is to give you a chance to experience educational software and to reflect on the experience. If you have never used educational software before, this experience will be a useful reference point for you throughout this module.

Before proceeding, click here to read about educational software use and categories.

As you will now be aware, there are so many categories of educational software, and you will need to develop criteria specific to the type of software that you envisage using.

If you have had experience of working with educational software before, especially the type that enhances learning and teaching, you have the option of proceeding directly to step 2 of the activity. This activity will serve as a base level against which you and others can compare your learning during this module.

Activity

  1. Spend a few hours using a piece of educational software that you would typically use with your learners. This is not a review, but an experience on which you can reflect. You or your institution may not actually possess such software. You do not have to purchase software for this purpose. You access software from:

    - a colleague or a friend
    - a neighbouring school
    - a software dealer who has demo versions
    - a local library or educator resource centre (many now keep copies of software)
    - a demonstration version provided by a supplier on the Internet

  2. Open your e-diary and record your thoughts about educational software. If this is the first time that you are using the e-diary in this module click here to open the e-diary, save it to your personal folder after writing your comments.

Note: Your tutor will have indicated to you which format to use for your e-diary. The Word document linked above gives you the basic template for a reflective journal, but your tutor may require you to use another tool such as a blog to capture your reflections. If you are unsure, consult your tutor.
