ICT in Schools - Learning pathway

The purpose of this module is to examine the roles of ICT in schools. In order to do this we need to focus not on the ICT, but on what teachers and learners do to extract maximum value out of the resources that ICT provides. In the process we will need to examine activities generally referred to as computer literacy, which often takes place without integration of any sort. We will consider how learning about ICT can be integrated while learning with ICT. In the process we will look at some exciting developments around minimally invasive learning as well as Vygotsky's reference to spontaneous and schooled learning.

This first activity introduces you to the roles that ICT typically plays in schools.

Activity 1
ICT in schools: Introduction

You are then asked to create and administer a survey in an attempt to better understand the attitudes that teachers have towards ICT.

You turn your attention to learners and the roles that they could typically play when learning with ICT.

Is there a need for teachers? A somewhat provocative question, but hopefully you will be able to give a well-reasoned response by the end of this next activity.

You will go on to examine the issue of computer literacy in some depth in an attempt to understand the issues with this widely-practiced activity.

While a teacher's role often ends up being a presenter of computer literacy, the next activity takes a look at the roles that teachers should be playing in an ICT integrated classroom.

Activity 7 turns your attention to your colleagues in an attempt to help you to better understand the various stages that they may be in regarding technology adoption.

To finally broaden your understanding you focus on schools and the changes that could happen in schools as a result of ICT integration.

In preparation for your final assignment you use an anlaysis technique for gauging school readiness for ICT.
