Learning Pathway: Questioning and thinking skills

In the first activity you will spend time reflecting on good and bad teaching. The readings in this first activity are central to the theme of the module of thinking and questioning skills.
Activity 1
Reflections on your
past experiences
as a learner
You will reflect on a number of readings about how to encourage learners to think and the sort of classroom that nurtures creativity.

Activity 2
What questions
do I ask and why?

One of the key aspects of effective teaching is the skill of questioning. The theme of using open and closed questions is one that runs throughout this and other modules in the Educators' Network.
Activity 3
Using open, closed,
and leading questions
Teachers sometimes wonder how to promote discussion in their classes. This activity provides some practical suggestions to accompany the theory about how learners could become engaged in discussion.
Activity 4
How can I promote discussion in class?
To expect learners to ask questions also seems difficult in some classrooms. In this activity we explore a few teaching techniques to assist with this; the most important aspects being the atmosphere that exists in the classroom, and the way that the teacher tries to awaken curiosity in learners.
Activity 5
How can I encourge learners to ask questions?
Problem-solving is generally considered to be an important part of teaching children to think. In this activity we explore some guidelines for engaging in this type of activity and are given a glimpse of how both international and local teachers have selected local problems to study. A number of problem solving strategies are explained with some links to the associated learning theory.
Activity 6
Helping learners to develop
problem-solving skills
This final activity gives some ideas leading up to project work and stresses the importance of good questioning techniques. If used wisely they can help learners think about the topic and engage with the content rather than regurgitate information they have copied. The threads of the module are pulled together and we are given some direction and advice as to how to employ these skills and teaching techniques further - and which modules to study next.
Activity 7
Phrasing questions for research
