Employ thinking skills strategies in the classroom

You have not used any thinking skills strategies

You know about thinking skills but do not have the confidence to use them often

You regularly engage your learners in activities that require them to use their thinking skills

Recognize appropriate  questions

You think all questions are the same and you do not use questions much in class

You are starting to make use of different questions for different purposes, including open-ended questions to encourage thinking. But you are not sure when to use the appropriate ones.

You understand that different types of questions serve different purposes and use a wide variety of open and closed questions to lead thinking and guide inquiry

Stimulate interaction You do not like to interact much with learners in class You would like to interact with learners and you would like them to interact with each other, but you do not know how to achieve this You regularly have very interesting lessons where learners ask thought-provoking questions that result in valuable discussion and interaction

Empower learners to ask questions

Your learners never ask questions

You know that learners should ask questions but you find it difficult to give them opportunities

Your learners are always asking questions and you challenge them by asking questions that generate more questions from them

Problem-solving You do not give your learners opportunities to solve problems Your learners are starting to engage in problem solving activities but so far have not been very successful. Your learners are developing the type of thinking skills where they can systematically work through problems in groups.

Promotion of  a spirit of inquiry

You think that students should always be seen and not heard, and should listen to what the teacher tells them.

You think that it is important for learners to think but only when you tell them to. You want them to investigate but are not sure of how to start.

You are driven by the need to stimulate a spirit of inquiry in your classroom and you encourage learners to interact with the information they find.
