Activity 1: Reflections on your past experiences as a learner

Reflection on experiences: 30 minutes
e-mail group discussion: 45 minutes
Compiling list: 30 minutes

1 hr 45 mins

The purpose of this activity is to encourage you to think about the following questions:

  • What is effective teaching?
  • What kind of classroom environment will help learners to develop thinking skills?

We recommend that you first read through the activities on this page, without doing them yet.

Then read the following two pages:

effective teachers

encouraging creativity

While thinking about the following questions:

"What is the most important aspect of effective teaching?"
"How do you make learners think?"
and "How can we encourage creativity in our learners?"

Activity

1. Try to remember all the teachers who have ever taught you.  Which one was the very best teacher? Think about him/her and then write e-mail to your group to say what made this person an effective teacher. If you can't think of a good teacher, then choose the very worst teacher you had and write e-mail to your group telling them what made this person such an ineffective teacher.

2. We recommend that you read more about critical thinking, and then consider what sort of teaching encourages learners to start to think critically.

3. Develop a list which describes the qualities of an effective teacher.  You may list your qualities as criteria for effective teaching. Imagine that you are looking at a teacher at work (yourself or someone else). What qualities would you look for to know if they were effective?  Start your list with, "An effective teacher usually ......."

4. Send your list by e-mail to your group.

5. Read the mail from other people in your group and their lists of qualities. Respond to at least two other members of the group, where you feel you have something to say.  People will also respond to your ideas.

Use this interaction with your group to add to or change your list where you want to.

Think back on the activity you have just done and make notes in your e-dairy.
