Using a keyword
search
During this activity you are required
to search on the subject and questions that you defined
with your mentor
at the beginning of the module.
-
Connect to the
Internet, and use Google
(
http://www.google.com)
to search for information on your selected questions.
You may want to read about How
to use Google.
-
Use the guidelines
for evaluating information (you wrote these in your
e-diary during activity 4) to make
sure that the sites that you find and use are trustworthy
and reliable.
-
Optional: If you
want to refine your searches even more, read the
advice given in the optional reading below. Use
the word processor document called Google
(click here) to record your results.
- Share your findings and your conclusions
by sending the table as an attachment to e-mail
to the group.
Discuss your work with each other. Give them suggestions
to help them improve on their search skills where
you are able to.
- If there are good websites that
you have found during your search, share these by
completing the
web
site evaluation form.
Use your e-diary to
make closing comments about this activity.
Optional
activity
Before you move on
to more serious ways of using information websites,
try this Scavenger
Hunt. Use the search engine that you think is most
suitable for each search. Compare your answers with
your group.
Optional reading:
Although modern search engines like Google can operate
without specific keyword syntax, you may wish to explore
keyword syntax and a search engine like Alta Vista,
which uses such syntax. The following three links will
assist you:
