Module requirements


Previous experience

No specific previous experience of computers and the Internet (ICT) in schools is required for this module, other than the basic ICT skills required for students of this qualification. You will be able to benefit from this module if you are able to relate what you learn to previous classroom teaching experience.

Module requirements

You should start with Activity 0 - Hello Activity to meet the members of your group. We strongly recommend that you follow the activities in the order in which they appear. Click here to view a list of all the activities for this module.

Once you have completed the module, we will ask you to complete a short self-assessment form, based on the outcomes of the module.

Web access

In order to participate in this module you will need access to a computer that is linked to the Internet. You will be required to communicate with your group ans tutor via e-mail and other online collaboration tools.

Assessment

In this module you assessment will be weighted as follows:

  • Group collaboration as shown in your collaboration log 10%
  • Personal reflection as presented in your e-diary 10%
  • Assignment 1 20%
  • Assignment 2 25%
  • Assignment 3 35%
Assignment 1: Approaches to learning

This assignment is to be completed once you have completed Activity 4.

Base this assignment on your understanding of the reading and activities you have completed in Activities 1-4.

In an essay of no fewer than 800 words:

  • Compare different approaches to learning that you have tried in you classes. Which have been most successful?
  • Explain how 4 of Whitaker's guidelines have value for you, giving examples from your own teaching. You could either explain how you will change your teaching as a result of these guidelines, or you could describe how you already use these guidelines in your teaching.
  • What have been the most successful moments in your teaching and what are the factors that have caused this success? Identify at least 3 factors that you think are most responsible for successful teaching and learning, based on your experience. Give examples.
  • Identify one strategy in your teaching that you will change in order to impact more effectively on student behaviour. Give reasons why you have chosen this strategy.

Use the word processor to write this essay. Submit this essay as a file attachment to your tutor.

You have compared approaches to learning.

You have described the value of four guidelines and given examples from your own teaching.

You have identified 3 factors for satisfactory learning and teaching.

Identify one strategy in your teaching that you will change in order to impact more effectively on student behaviour. You have illustrated your comments with examples from teaching and learning in your classroom.

Assignment 2: Cognitive Development and ICT

This assignment is to be completed once you have completed Activity 8.

Base this assignment on your understanding of the reading and activities you have completed in Activities 5-8.

In an essay of no fewer than 800 words:

Explain how your knowledge of cognitive development has influenced your teaching with ICT. Focus on:

  • how the learner may experience your lessons differently;
  • what your and the learners' roles should be;
  • what the role of ICT in these lessons will be.

Use the word processor to write this essay. Submit this essay as a file attachment to your tutor.


Assessment criteria for Assignment 2

Mark

You have provided an evaluation of the principles of cognitive development that you would most like to see influence your teaching practice, especially when integrating ICT.

Maximum of 40

You have explained how these principles will make lessons more meaningful for learners.

You have described your role and the learners role in ICT-integrated lessons where you implement these principles.

You have explained what the role of ICT will be in these lessons.

Assignment 3: The role of ICT in supporting thinking skills

In this assignment you should take into consideration what you have read and experienced in activities 9-12.

If you have not already done so during these activities, plan and implement at least one lesson in which:

  • ICT is integrated
  • you implement a questioning strategy
  • learners are encouraged to think

After the lesson write detailed reflective notes in your e-diary , structuring them as follows:

  • Describe your previous practice in presenting this lesson
  • Describe how you have changed the lesson this time
  • Explain the questioning strategy you intended to use in the lesson
  • Describe how the use of ICT has supported the development of questioning and thinking skills in this lesson
  • Comment how the lesson went; what went well and what did not go well
  • Explain what you will do differently next time you teach this lesson and why you have decided on this action.

Save your e-diary. Submit the e-diary and your e-mail log as a file attachment in e-mail to your tutor.
