Module requirements

Previous experience

This is a very practical module, and it is not essential that you have experience in other modules. This module is dependent on basic skills required for online collaboration and word processing. These are the skills you will need to be able to proceed with the course in distance-supported mode.

Module requirements

A key aspect of this module is that you plan and implement a project with a class. This will include collaboration between your class and another class within the module group. If you are not a subject teacher, it is vital that you identify a class you can work with, and make arrangements with the educator concerned and your school management, in order to implement this project. You need to plan ahead so that you can have computer and Internet access to facilitate these activities.

You should start with Activity 0 to meet the members of your group. All 11 Activities are part of the module and we strongly recommend that you follow the activities in the order in which they appear. You can view the activities by clicking on the Activities link on the left-hand side of this page.

You are required to collaborate online with members of your group during this module. This interaction is part of the activities and you must follow the instructions of each activity carefully.
You must therefore have a reliable Internet connection throughout this module.

Once you have completed the module, we will ask you to complete a short self-assessment form, based on the outcomes of the module.

Click here to view the self-assessment form.

We will also ask you to complete a brief evaluation form.

Web access

In order to participate in this module you will need access to a computer that is linked to the Internet. You will also need a Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox to access recommended websites during the module.

Assessment

In this module you assessment will be weighted as follows:

  • Online collaboration as shown in your collaboration log = 10%
  • Personal reflection as presented in your e-diary = 10%
  • Assignment 1 = 10%
  • Assignment 2 = 20%
  • Assignment 3 = 50%

Assignment 1: Reflection on current practice

This assignment should be attempted once you have completed Activity 2

What to do:

Consider the key aspects of Project-based learning and reflect on your current practice in each of these areas. Describe the reasons for your current practice and what you consider the constraints to be that prevent you from implementing a project-based unit of work. Describe your plan to overcome these constraints.

Use a word processor to write this document. It should have no fewer than 500 words.

What to submit:

Save your essay as <your_student_number>-Elective9-PBL
e.g. 205654321-Elective9-PBL

Send this saved document as an attachment in e-mail to your tutor (using the subject heading "Learning with Projects - Assignment 1").

Assessment criteria for Assignment 1

You described your current practice in each key area of project-based learning

Maximum of 30

You analysed your situation and identified the constraints

Maximum of 30

You developed a plan to overcome the major constraints

Assignment 2: Analysing a classroom project

This assignment should be attempted once you have completed Activity 5

What to do:

Provide the interview script and, in a column alongside the teacher's responses, provide your analytical comment. These comments should identify the key success factors and constraints in the management of the project. Draw final conclusions and draw up a list of guidelines for planning and implementing online collaborative project-based learning.

Your interview script and comments should be no fewer than 1000 words.

What to submit:

Save your essay as <your_student_number>-Elective9-Interview
