Activity 4: The information process

Reading: 30 mins
Interactive: 30 mins
Reading project summary: 30 mins
Basic planning: 1 hr

2 hrs 30 mins

  • What kinds of activities go into a PBL project?
  • How can I build a balanced project that uses different skills and modes?

It is important to understand that a project is a process centred around information, and it is necessary to balance the kinds of activities in which the learners deal with information.

ACTIVITY
  1. Read the article The Information Process

  2. Open the file The Information Process Exercise (a Flash file). You will see that it contains a list of many different kinds of class activities. Your job is to arrange these activities in the table by placing the activities in the correct section of the table (use cut and paste, or simply drag). This will help you to think about and increase your undertsanding of the information process.

    Case study

  3. Read the summary of activities of the project entitled "If I were the President...". What activities did this project have in each of the 3 stages of the information process. Use this file named IIWTP Information Process to complete this analysis. Save the file and send it as an attachment in email to your tutor (using the subject heading "Information process") for feedback.

    Planning

  4. A reminder that your class will participate in a Learning Circle (inter-classroom collaboration) project, using ideas and principles as illustrated by the above case study.

Click here to see an overview of the whole project, and what is required of you and your learners.

You will be participating in Phase 1 of the Learning Circle at this stage, which is focused on testing your connectivity with the group address.

To read more about learning circles see the Bridges of Learning website.

  5. Participate in a collaborative online brainstorm with your group. Brainstorm a list of possible project ideas for this project with your group members.
Note: Each class may conduct a different project. Keep the project idea quite simple. Make it a simple invesitgation of an interesting question.

  6. As you receive the contributions from your group, select what you consider to be the best ideas. Open the Project Planner that you saved in activity 3 and enter your project title.

  7. Complete the section on Stages of the information process. Save the file.

  8. Share your project title with your group by sending a message to the group.

  9. Send your project planner as a file attachment in email to your tutor (using the subject heading "Project idea") for feedback.

  10. Use your e-diary to make closing comments about this activity.
