Activity 5: Assessment of projects

Reading and reflection: 1 hr
Group interaction 30 mins
Completing plan: 1 hr

2 hrs 30 mins

  • How do I ensure that learners keep working at their projects, and how do I assess their work?
  • When do I assess?
  • What do I assess?
  • Who do I assess?
  • Who does the assessment?

As you design activities, you need to build in an assessment for that activity.

  • Think of who will be assessed: the individuals in your class, or the groups they are working in.

  • Think of who will conduct the assessment. Note that the assessment does not need to be conducted by you, as it could be a self-assessment or peer-assessment.

  • Think of how you can assess the learners while they are busy with an activity in a way which helps them to improve their work (formative assessment).

  • Think of the outcome(s) you wish your learners to achieve, and then devise a rubric which allows the assessor to measure how well the outcome has been achieved.

Activity
  1. Read the article on Assessment & monitoring.

    Case study

  2. Look at the Assessment plan for IIWTP and note the kinds of assessment that are included in the project. As you look at this, think about your own project and how you can include a variety of assessment methods.

    Planning

  3. Complete the assessment overview in your Project Planner, which you have saved in your home folder.

  4. Choose one possible activity from your project, and fill in an assessment plan for that activity in your Project Planner.

  5. Once you have completed it, save it and send it as a file attachment in email to your tutor (using the subject heading "Activity Assessment") for feedback.
ASSIGNMENT 2

This assignment should be attempted once you have completed Activity 5

What to do:

Find a teacher in your school or another school who has managed a classroom-based project. Interview that teacher and analyse the events of the project. Provide the interview script and, in a column alongside the teacher's responses, provide your analytical comment. These comments should identify the key success factors and constraints in the management of the project. Draw final conclusions and draw up a list of guidelines for planning and implementing online collaborative project-based learning.

Your interview script and comments should be no fewer than 1000 words.

What to submit:

Save your essay as <your_student_number>-Elective9-Interview
e.g. 205654321-Elective9-Interview

Send this saved document as an attachment in e-mail to your tutor (using the subject heading "Learning with Projects - Assignment 2 ").
