Activity 3: Searching for mathematics classroom resources

4 hrs

In this activity you will use the topic you chose in the previous activity to find interesting new ideas to use to develop your learners' understanding of specific topics in mathematics. You will be expected to search the Internet and find different resources that might help you to develop your own classroom resource.

Activity

You will be expected find at least three web resources on the Internet that have different ideas about the topic you have chosen to develop. You will also be expected to review the resources and share your opinions with your group. You will need to use the resources you find to develop a plan for a learning experience in the next activity, so make sure you choose carefully. If you are not able to find suitable resources for your particular topic, now is the time to change it. If you need to change, consider again the websites you have already explored, and choose a topic for which you know you will be able to find good material. When you are more experienced, and have more time, you can choose the topic first and then search until you do find what you need.

  1. Look at the information on benchmark test for good teaching resources now so that you know what kinds of things you are looking for. Remember you will be looking for resources that you can adapt and use in your mathematics classroom.
  1. Connect to the Internet and search for information on your selected topic and sub-topics. Alternatively, you may like to use the Maths websites' own search facilities, that allow you to search within that site. For a list of good Maths sites, re-visit Activity 2 from the module ICT Maths Resources for Educators.

Make notes of the type of mathematics resources that are available on each site. Try to look for resources that you will be able to use but also look at other interesting possibilities.

  1. Complete the resource evaluation table for at least three different website resources you have found. You may find the following web evaluation tips useful.
  1. Open the document called resource review and write a review of the resources you found under the headings.
  • The topics you found resources for.
  • What you liked and disliked about the resources you found.
  • Why you think these will improve your learner's abilities in mathematics.
  1. Share your document online with your group (using the subject heading "Resource Review").

Use your e-diary to make closing comments about what you found exciting and what you found frustrating about this activity.
