Activity 2: Exploring web resources for mathematics

As you find your way around the Internet and the world wide web you will soon realise that there are many educational web pages and websites offering different products and services. As a practising mathematics teacher it may be of interest to you to organise the sites you will be visiting according to what they can offer. There are many websites like the ones below offering lesson plans for mathematics and other learning areas.

It is very useful to be able to save websites and view them offline, so as to keep phone costs down. If you need help on this, please consult the tip sheet on saving websites.

Activity

Use your e-diary to record your thoughts about finding Mathematics resources on websites. Do you have experience of this, if so, has it been helpful in your teaching practice?

Maths Forum - an international website, the Math Forum's mission is to provide resources, materials, activities, person-to-person interactions, and educational products and services that enrich and support teaching and learning in an increasingly technological world.

Malati (Mathematics Learning and Teaching Initiative) - MALATI's brief was to work independently, complementary to government curriculum development, seeking to develop, pilot and spread alternative approaches and tools for teaching and learning mathematics and at the same time, to make a direct contribution to Curriculum 2005, e.g. by developing materials as interpretations of Curriculum 2005 and making these available to LACs and publishers for maximum immediate impact. MALATI is a co-operative project of mathematics educators at the Universities of the Western Cape, Stellenbosch and Cape Town

Discovery Education - Although not focusing exclusively on Mathematics, DiscoverySchool.com is an American website that provides innovative teaching materials for teachers, useful and enjoyable resources for students, and smart advice for parents about how to help their children enjoy learning and excel in school.

Mathsnet - MathsNet.net is an independent British educational website providing free mathematics resources to the education community. Its aim is to offer truly interactive resources that are both wide and deep in terms of their applicability and usefulness. MathsNet is not an online textbook. It is interactive, requiring the user to participate rather than be a passive observer.

Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP) - COMAP, the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications, is an award-winning non-profit organization in the United States of America whose mission is to improve mathematics education for students of all ages.
