Activity 4: Planning a learning experience

2 hrs

In this activity you will be preparing an outline plan for a learning experience that you will be developing. Your plan will be a work-in-progress, and you will add to it and modify it as you gather and refine your ideas. You should by now have collected some good ideas and at least some resources based on your chosen topic. The next step in the development process is to begin to plan out what your outcomes will be and which activities you will take into the classroom and when.

During this activity you will be required to produce an outline plan of a learning experience covering at least 4 hours of learning including homework and self-study. You will also be developing your skills in the use of tables in a word processor.

In Activities 5-6, you will be refining your plan, until in Activity 7, you produce a resource that you can use in your classroom.

To give you an idea of where you are going, you may like to look at an example of the development of a resource done by one of the educators who have already studied this module, before continuing with planning your own.

Bongani has chosen the topic of Similarity in Geometry, and has some very interesting and challenging activities, with several real life applications.

Here is his plan: Bongani's Activity 4

In his Activity 5, he has set his plan out in a table:

Bongani's Activity 5

Activity 6 is an activity in which you look at different aspects of formatting tables, so you can make any final adjustments to your plan.

Finally, Bongani brings it all together in Activity 7, and produces his resource:

Activity

  1. Look at your mathematics curriculum document for the grade you have chosen. Look up your chosen topic and make notes about the requirements. Present all this information in the document called planning notes. You are going to re-use this document in the next activity, so make sure you save a copy somewhere.
  2. Identify one or two (assessment) standards that you think can be developed during a learning experience on this topic.
  3. Write some lesson objectives for the learning experience. Start each objective with the phrase:

By the end of this learning experience learners should be able to...

  1. Identify all the "products" that learners will have as evidence of their abilities by the end of the learning experience. Note these down with the title Assessment Evidence. The 3 classes of mathematical competencies identified by the Programme for International Student Assessment may guide you in the different aspects you could be assessing.

  2. Write a brief summary of each of the activities that learners will do in order to complete the activity. List all the resources you will need for each activity.
Note down how long you think each activity will take.

Present all this information in the document called planning notes.

  3. When you have prepared your document, share the document with your group (using the subject heading "Planning notes"). In the document or message, explain the logic behind what you have done.

Use your e-diary to write about the experience of writing objectives and planning in this way.
