Module requirements


Previous experience

To successfully complete this module you should:

  • Be currently and directly involved in/with a school. You need to have knowledge about a specific school context and current practice and have a place in which to plan and lead.
  • Be basically computer literate.
  • Have access to a reliable computer and e-mail account, and Internet access.
  • Access and respond to messages online at least three times a week.

This module focuses primarily on the roles of the educator that relate to being a

  • Learning mediator
  • Interpreter and designer of learning programmes
  • Assessor
  • Learning area specialist

but by participating in this module you are also being a scholar, researcher and lifelong learner. If you have the will to fulfill these roles, you have the spirit that you need to participate in this module.

Module requirements

You should start with Activity 0 - Hello Activity to meet the members of your group. We strongly recommend that you follow the activities in the order in which they appear. Click here to view a list of all the activities for this module.

Once you have completed the module, we will ask you to complete a short self-assessment form, based on the outcomes of the module.

Web access

In order to participate in this module you will need access to a computer that is linked to the Internet. You will also need a Web browser such as Internet Exploreror Firefox to access websites during the module. We expect that you will be spending a considerable amount of time on the Internet during the course of this module. You will need to be aware of the likely telephone costs before deciding to start this module.

Assessment

In this module you assessment will be weighted as follows:

  • Group collaboration as shown in your collaboration log = 10%
  • Personal reflection as presented in your e-diary = 10%
  • Assignment 1 = 25%
  • Assignment 2 = 55%
ASSIGNMENT 1: Identifying best practice in research-based learning

You should attempt this assignment after you have completed Activity 2.

What to do:

Identify at least 5 units of work that have been successfully implemented by other teachers and are modelled on research-based learning (learning that requires learners to respond to open questions by finding information from various sources). Analyse these units and identify the principles of best practice that emerges from this analysis. Compile a list of 10 points as guidelines for the design of research-based units

Use the examples of units that appear on the CD. Your analysis document should be no fewer than 800 words.

What to submit:

Save your essay as <your_student_number>-Elective10-principles

Send this saved document as a file attachment in e-mail to your tutor (using the subject heading "Working with Information - Assignment 1").

Assessment criteria for Assignment 1

You have listed 5 research based units and their origin

Maximum of 20

You have analysed these units and identified the principles of best practice

Maximum of 60

You have compiled a list of 10 points as guidelines

ASSIGNMENT 2: Planning scaffolded learning experiences

This assignment should be attempted while you are doing all the activities of the module. You should complete the assignment once you have completed all the activities in the module.

What to do:

Identify a unit of work for which you would like to implement a research-based approach to learning within the next few months.

Using any of the template models suggested in this module, design the unit.

Use the template provided to draw up an implementation plan. Explain how you will integrate ICT and why you think the use of ICT is appropriate.

Use ICT resources to develop at least 6 learner support documents that should include examples from each of Dodge's scaffold types viz. reception, transformation and production scaffolds

What to submit:

If your designed project consists of several files, compress

  • these project files AND
  • the 6 learner support documents

into a Zip file.
