A RACE STILL TO BE RUN

by Robert Robinson

My hero is not a person who saved anyone from a burning building. My hero is Terry Fox. Terry Fox is a person who had cancer in the bone of his right leg. He was raising money for cancer research by running across Canada. He called it the marathon of hope.

Terry Fox started by dipping his artificial leg in the Atlantic ocean at Saint John Newfoundland. Every day he ran approximately 26 miles. He ran for 143 days. Just as Terry entered Thunder Bay he was overcome by his cancer. The cancer had spread into his lungs. He died in June of 1981. He had raised $24.17 million for cancer research. Today we continue Terry's dream to find a cure for cancer. There is a Terry Fox run every year in 4,200 places. People still remember Terry Fox. His dream may just come true. This race is still run all over the world by millions of people, in memory of Terry Fox. Unfortunately the Terry Fox race is no longer run in South Africa.
