Experience requirements
Before you begin with this module, we recommend
that you assess your experience in terms of computer use.
Answer the following questions to assess your abilities:
- Do you name, save, and store files regularly,
and are you confident that you can find them again?
- Have you used a word processor to create
a range of documents?
- Are you comfortable with typing and
formatting paragraphs and documents?
- Do you regularly use the Internet, and
have you visited many websites?
- Have you used a graphics package to
create an image and save it for use in a document or other
programme?
- Are you confident that you can try to
learn a new programme with little support?
- Do you want to learn how to publish Web
sites?
If
your answers to the questions above are yes, then you are
ready to continue with this module. If the majority of your
answers are no, then you will need to build up your computer
skills before starting this module.
This CD contains tips that
will help you improve your computer skills (see the
Help menu at the top of the page). You will also have to use
your initiative in learning to work with new programmes and
functions that extend beyond the scope of the tip sheets.
Software Requirements
To continue with
the course you will need to have access to several software
programmes. Some of the software is available on this CD in
the /programmes folder. Click on the links below to install
the programmes as you require them.
You will require the following programmes:
- A Web browser e.g. Internet
Explorer or Netscape
- A Web page editor e.g. MS Front Page.
- A graphics programme that supports
.jpg and .gif file formats. MS Paint* (the Windows
accessory) does not support these formats. Older versions
of the MS Office* included a programme called MS
Photodraw*.
- A 30-day trial of Paint Shop Pro*
7 is available on this CD. Because it is a 30-day trial,
you should not install it before you are required to use
it in the course. Tip sheets are provided on this CD for
Paint Shop Pro*.
- An FTP programme. FTP stands for
File Transfer Protocol. This programme is used for transferring
your Web pages from your computer to a Web
server so that they are accessible to all Internet users.
AceFTP is another programme of this nature and
is available on this CD. Tips for AceFTP are also
available on this CD.
Click on the links below to install the
programmes you require.

Module requirements You should start
with Activity 0 - Hello Activity to meet the members of your
group. You will be required to complete all
the activities in this module with the exception of the
optional reading about the creation of a template attached to
activity 8.
You are required
to interact by e-mail with members of your group during this
module. This interaction is part of the activities and you
must follow the instructions of each activity carefully.
Once you have completed the module, we
will ask you to complete a short self-assessment form, based
on the outcomes of
the module.
Click here to view the self-assessment
form.
We will also ask you to complete a brief
evaluation form.
evaluation form.
Assessment
In this module
your assessment will be weighted as follows:
- Group collaboration as shown in your collaboration
log = 10%
- Personal reflection as presented in your
e-diary = 10%
- Assignment 1 = 80%
Note:
There is just one assignment in this module. The final outcome
of publishing a functional web page must be achieved. Take
note of the important deliverable in the assessment guidelines.
This will help you to achieve the final outcome.
Assignment
1: Designing and publishing a website
This assignment should be completed
systematically throughout the module, which should last
for no longer than 7 weeks. The best way to achieve
this is to work systematically through the activities.
What to do:
- Work through the activities in
the module. These will guide you to produce a basic
website with sound design principles
- Publish the website and test
its functionality – fix errors
- Create and apply a simple evaluation
of your site, focusing on sound functionality and
design, but including the educational value and credibility
of the content in your criteria.
- Poll members of your group and
other colleagues and friends and ask them to give
you feedback about the site. Summarise their feedback
in your e-diary
- Consider the feedback and apply
changes where necessary. Record this in your e-diary
What to submit:
Submit your portfolio for this module
to your tutor. This should include:
- E-diary, saved as <your_student_number>-Elective1-ediary
- Collaboration logbook, saved as <your_student_number>-Elective1-collaboration
- website planning document, saved
as <your_student_number>-Elective1-planning
- Details of the URL (location)
of your website (in the message of your email).
Send these documents as file attachments
in e-mail
to your tutor (Web Design Assignment).
