In this activity we will be asking you to
use one of three types of resources that one finds on the
Internet to form the basis of a simple lesson activity. You
will design a simple assessment tool to assess one aspect
of that lesson. In this lesson you should place emphasis on
the skills commonly associated with information literacy.
According to the Association of College
and Research Libraries:
"Information
Literacy is the set of skills needed to find, retrieve,
analyze, and use information". Essentially, information
literacy combines the specialized techniques of searching
print and electronic information resources with certain
thinking skills - analytical thinking, strategic thinking,
critical thinking, and decision making - applied to solving
problems using information."

The American Library Association defines
information literacy as :
“A set
of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information
is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and
use effectively the needed information.”

Key skills associated with information
literacy are:
- Ability to state a problem
- Ability to identify appropriate information
resources
- Ability to develop an information search
strategy
- Ability to evaluate information retrieved
- Understanding of the ethical use of information
The three focus areas of information that
you should choose from in this activity are reference resources,
new resources or current data resources. You will plan a lesson
and integrate assessment methods and tools with that lesson.
