Group interaction: 40 mins

4 hrs

The purpose of this activity is for you to:

  • get ideas on how the online resources housing daily-updated, current information can be used in classrooms, and to decide whether you would like to use similar strategies.
  • create an assessment tool for a lesson activity that includes using online current data resources

We will refer you to examples of current data sources. We would then like you to create your own lesson, based on such resources.

Before beginning the activity, we recommend that you read more about Using current information.

Group Activity 6C

  1. Log on to Internet and conduct a search, using Google,  to find current information on a topic that relates to your learning area. Refer to Using current information for more ideas on how to do this.

  2. Share any useful websites that you find by sending a message to your group (using the subject heading "Current information") . Mention the website address, the information you found, and how you want to use it. If you have had problems in finding current information, share these problems with the group. If you are able to help other members find current sites, respond to the group with your ideas.

  3. Once you have found a site with current information that suits your needs, create a lesson activity that makes use of this current information source.

  4. Develop an assessment tool (if you do not already have one that is perfect for this purpose) that will assess your learners' ability to use current data resources.

  5. Use this lesson activity in your class. As the lesson progresses, provide ongoing formative assessment.

  6. Conclude the lesson by asking someone in each group to describe their group's experience (positive and negative). Complete the assessment for your learners and provide one example of a completed assessment tool to your group.

  7. Send a message to your group (using the subject heading "Staying current") in which you
    - describe how the class managed. Mention difficulties as well as successes.
    - attach your lesson activity and completed assessment tool.

  8. Adapt your lesson activity based on feedback from your group and mentor.
