Reading and Reflection: 3 hrs
Group Activity: 2 hrs
Classroom Activity & preparation: 4 hrs
Reflection: 1 hr

10 hrs

The purpose of this activity is to make you more aware of the issue of intellectual copyright and how to overcome violations by learners.

To remind youself of the issue of copyright we recommend that you

Quite often the problem of copyright violations can be easily avoided. If you design activities for your learners that require synthesis, challenge their thinking and require the use of several information sources they will be forced to synthesise information from these sources and to produce original thoughts about this information.

Before you do this activity, we recommend that you read Synthesis - Creating knowledge.

Group activity 11

  1. Using the topic and the information you have found, design an activity for learners that requires them to combine separate bits of information in order to create a new way of doing something. Use one or more of the key words from this list to describe what the learners will have to do:

    create
    design
    compose
    formulate
    produce
    construct
    plan
    predict

The activity should last for at least one lesson, but no more than three lessons.

  1. Take two or three days to discuss this task with your colleagues at school and share your ideas in a message to your group (using the subject heading "Planning synthesis activity"). Respond to your group as they write about their ideas. Help each other to formulate interesting activities.
  2. Give the activity to your learners to do. Let them choose how they want to present their ideas to you. They should:
  • include a problem or challenge related to a topic you have studied;
  • include separate bits of information about the topic, from different sources;
  • combine these different bits of information;
  • come up with a new idea for doing something which will solve the problem or respond to the challenge
  • include a bibliography.

Note: learners could use these criteria to assess their own or each others' work.

  1. Once the learners have presented their ideas to you, share your experiences of the activity by writing a message to your group (using the subject heading "Feedback on synthesis activity").

Analyse this lesson, explaining the reasons for the events in the classroom, and identifying areas for improvement.

Develop a plan or strategy for future action which reflects an integration of what you have learnt through your reflection on this lesson.

What to submit:

Save your lesson analysis as <your_student_number>-Core2A-lesson-analysis . e.g. 205654321-Core2A-lesson-analysis

Save your e-diary as <your_student_number>-Core2A-ediary .
e.g. 205654321-Core2A-ediary

Save your collaboration log as <your_student_number>-Core2A-collaboration.
