Purpose

The purpose of this module is to examine the roles of ICT in schools. In order to do this we need to focus not on the ICT, but on what teachers and learners do to extract maximum value out of the resources that ICT provides. In the process we will need to examine activities generally referred to as computer literacy, which often takes place without integration of any sort. We will consider how learning about ICT can be integrated while learning with ICT. In the process we will look at some exciting developments around minimally invasive learning as well as Vygotsky's reference to spontaneous and schooled learning.

The biggest challenge in ICT integration lies with the role of the teacher and the mindsets that teachers have about ICT and about teaching and learning. It is commonly acknowledged that ICT integration cannot succeed unless the teaching practice allows for learning opportunities where ICT can support learning processes. These processes are largely learner-centred. To help us understand how successful ICT integration occurs within our own schools, we briefly look at some technology adoption models that focus on the stages of growth that a teacher will go through when adopting technology to support teaching and learning. The module concludes with an analysis of school readiness for ICT. This will give you the foundational understanding to proceed with modules on ICT management and planning, if you choose to do so.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Evaluate the different roles of ICT in schools

  2. Understand the role of computer literacy, with particular reference to the educational use of computers as a tool in a country such as your own.

  3. Distinguish between teaching about ICT and teaching with ICT

  4. Create a unit plan outline that makes provision for ICT Integration

  5. Recognise typical phases of technology adoption experienced by teachers.
