Activity 9: Constructivism

1 hr

  • What is Constructivism? What are its implications for the classroom?
  • What are the implications of Constructivism for Learner vs teacher roles?
  • How do learners "construct their own meaning"?
  • How can I promote self management?
  • How do I make my project relevant to the real world of the learners?

You should proceed with this evaluation activity while you wait for other classes to respond to your class's questions.

You will probably be familiar with the idea of making a lesson or project learner-centred. Learner-centredness is a key aspect of PBL. This idea is based on an educational philosophy called Constructivism. In this activity, you explore Constructivism, and examine some of its implications in the classroom. This activity is an opportunity to reflect on some of the activities you have already conducted with your learners, and to think about your own learning in this module so far.

Activity

Read this article on Constructivism, then complete the following tasks:
  1. Use your e-diary to reflect on the following questions.
  • In what ways has your teaching been constructivist (before starting the module, and during this module)?
  • In what ways has it not been?
  • Suggest reasons why you have been teaching the way you have been up to now, and outline ways you could change to a more constructivist approach if you have not been working in this way.
  • How has this module changed the way you think about your work as an educator?
  • Do you think you have been engaged in constructivist tasks? Why/why not?
  1. Evaluate your own project and note elements of constructivism using the Constructivism checklist. Think critically about your project and consider which changes, if any, you would make to improve your project, based on the constructivism checklist.
