The Learning Community

The role of the community in enhancing learning

The activities in the various modules provide opportunities for you to:

  • Reflect, or think about your own teaching and learning
  • Experience different learning opportunities
  • Invent and share ideas
  • Share problems and their possible solutions
  • Share resources.

An important part of most activities is participating in online (e-mail) discussion with a small group of your peers. During each module, we will assign you to a group of fellow educators from around the country, so that you can share ideas, experiences, and the results of your work with each other. The diagram below illustrates how this will work in practice.

Group interaction adds value to the learning process. Other educators' ideas spark off creativity and assist in reflection (thinking about what is happening). Learning in community will help you become reflexive (think about what you do and make changes to improve your practice where necessary).

Using the Internet means your learning community does not have to be in the same place at the same time. Online learning communities can link educators from all over the country.
