Making Stone Soup
Mr. Buckman's Second Grade Class
In March, our class read the tale of "Stone Soup." It is the story of 3 soldiers tricking a village into sharing their food and lodgings even though village originally said they had none to give.  As an ending activity, the class made a pot of Stone Soup. Below are the photos of the class making Stone Soup. Thanks to Mrs. McCaughlin for taking many of the photos. Click here to return to the Stone Soup page.
You have to be very careful when you cut in school with a knife.  These children are trying to make Stone Soup, cutting potatoes, carrots, and cabbage.

Here are two children in our class cutting up vegetables.  We used an assortment of vegetables such as cabbage, carrots and potatoes.  We had to be very careful with the sharp knives not to cut ourselves.

Making the soup meant that the children had to work together in order to complete their task.
Here is one child from our class putting in the beef broth.  We put the beef broth in instead of the water so the soup could have more flavor.

The children in Mr. Buckman's Class are adding stones to the Stone Soup.  It is very interesting to watch a stone go into a soup, and the recipe called for three stones, not one!

This is a picture of most of the children in the class putting in the beef broth and the other ingredients.  We thought beef broth would taste better than water.  And it did!

The children look happy as they put the cut up vegetables into the large soup pot.
After letting the soup cook for an hour and a half, Mr. Buckman and Mrs. McCaughrin serve the soup to the class.  The children agree that "Stone Soup" was a fun book to read and a tasty soup to make together!
