Activity 5: Planning your site

Planning the content: 1 hour
Group interaction: 1 hour
Discussion with tutor: 30 minutes

2 hrs 30 mins

The purpose of this next activity is for you to think about and decide on what kind of website you would like to produce. You will not have to develop a website that is as complete as those you've already looked at.

Websites are constantly being updated and are changing all the time, so make sure that you have the opportunity to re-visit your website once you have completed the module. This will allow you to improve on it in your own time.

We recommend that you read a short document on education-related websites. These will give you some idea of the kinds of websites being produced in the area of education.

Activity

Use your e-diary to make some initial comments.

  1. Think about why you have chosen this module. Decide whether you are going to continue with your school website or on some other possible topic. Discuss your decision with some colleagues at your school.
  2. You may read additional information about planning your site by clicking on Planning your content outline.
  3. There is a form to help you plan the content of your site if you need it - click on outline.doc.
  4. Once you have decided on a website that you will create during this module, send a message to your tutor (using the subject heading "Planning my site") and give details about the following:
  • The name of your proposed website
  • The target audience of your website
  • The purpose of your website
  • Your main objectives in creating this website
  • A short outline of the information your website will contain.

Your tutor will discuss your project with you. Make sure that you are clear about the purpose of your website, and that you maintain this focus as you progress.

NOTE: This planning document is important - it forms part of your final assessment. Try to make the content outline as detailed as possible - that is, include reference to every page - it must be a bit like a site map (you will learn more about site maps in the next activity)
    .

Use your e-diary to make comments about this activity.
