Activity 2: Publishing the first pages of your website

Uploading your site: 1 hour
Testing and making changes:1 hour

2 hrs

The purpose of this activity is for you to publish your website on a Web server.

Now that you have designed your Web pages and linked files to each other, you have a website that can be published. All that remains is for you to publish this website to a Web server. You will be developing the site later in the module.

In order to do this activity, you will need to install and use an FTP programme. (FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and it is used when you upload, or transfer, files to a Web server). If you do not have such a programme, one is available on this CD.

When configuring your FTP programme, you will have to get the instructions and details from your tutor. You will require a:

Host address
User ID
Password

We suggest that you read the following tip sheets to learn more about FTP.

How to install the FTP programme (use the name and password that your education provider has given you).
How to upload files.

Note: Your course provider may have an alternative way of accessing webserver space. There are several free website facilities online as well. Confirm with your tutor which method you should use.

Activity

Use your e-diary to make initial comments.

  1. Using the FTP programme that you have installed (or another method if you have been instructedto do so), upload all the files of your website to the Web server.
  2. Connect to the Internet, and view the files on the website. Your tutor will give you the site address.
  3. Test that all the links are working, and that all the graphics are in place. This is a very important step in establishing the integrity (value) of your site. No one will spend time browsing a site that has missing graphics and links that do not work.
  4. Make changes to the documents in which you spot errors. Then upload them again.
  5. Write a message to your group (using the subject heading "My website") giving them the address of your website.
  6. Provide feedback and encouragement to your group members after viewing their websites.
Use your e-diary to make comments about this activity.
