Activity 1: Overview of project-based learning

During this activity we will focus on the following questions:

  • What is Project Based learning (PBL)?
  • What are the key aspects of PBL?
  • What do these mean?
  • What are some examples of PBL?

Activity
  1. Open your e-diary and write your opening thoughts about this topic. If this is the first time that you are using the e-diary in this module click here to open the e-diary, and save it to your personal folder after writing your comments.

    Note: Your tutor will have indicated to you which format to use for your e-diary. The Word document linked above gives you the basic template for a reflective journal, but your tutor may require you to use another tool such as a blog to capture your reflections. If you are unsure, consult your tutor.


  2. Read the mini-articles on project-based learning (PBL) by exploring this mindmap.

    Follow the instructions below and create a Powerpoint presentation about PBL.

Instructions

  • Open the PowerPoint document Key Aspects.ppt. Save it (using Save As...) in your home folder and close the file. Start Powerpoint and open the file called Key Aspects.ppt from your home folder.
  • Open the Word document called Key Aspects.doc. You will be copying sentences from this file to the PowerPoint file.
  • For each slide in the presentation, find one suitable description in the Word doc. Copy and paste the description sentence from the Word document to the PowerPoint slide.
  • For each slide in the presentation, find one suitable example in the Word doc. Copy and paste the example sentence from the Word document to the PowerPoint slide.
  • You can find tip sheets for working with PowerPoint by clicking on the Tip Sheets button. A quick way to get a presentation looking good is to use a design template.
  • You will find photos in the photo gallery for Activity 1 which you can use to illustrate your presentation; choose one picture for each key aspect. Right-click on the picture in the gallery, and choose Copy, then go to your PowerPoint presentation, and Right-click and choose Paste.

Tips: Restrict each point to no more than 6 words. Restrict each page to no more than 6 points.

Save your PowerPoint presentation in your home folder as My Key Aspects

  1. Use your e-diary to reflect on your feelings about PBL.
