To assist you with refining
your own plan, we will look at an excellent
resource providing an introduction to data handling.
The plan for this learning experience is the
one we looked at in Activity 5.
Data
handling introduction, a Grade 9 Activity (Grade depending on your local country curriculum)
This activity will give you a
good idea of what is possible (even if you are not
teaching Grade 9)
Now think about these questions:
- What do you think is the purpose
of the first page?
- Who is the resource written to?
- Is the language used appropriate?
- Do you think the pictures on the
first page give the resource any appeal?
- What is that appeal?
- Do you think the graphics are necessary?
- Why or why not?
- Do you think the resource looks
well organised and purposeful?
- Is the style and numbering of the
headings and sub-headings clear and consistent?
- Do you think the pages look too
crowded or too empty?
- Which ones in particular?
- Now Look
at one of the units of work shown as examples here.
For the unit you choose, answer the same questions
as you did in point 1, - but this time you will be
sending your answers to these questions to your tutor .
Paper-based materials
- Send a message to
your tutor (using ths subject heading "Review of resources") reporting on your review of the resources
that you looked at. Include your answers to the questions
in point 2.

Printed resources:
The activities in this list include examples for Gr
4 - Gr 12.
Protec
resources:
This list from Protec, is for Grade 10 level, but the
approach will be of interest to all Maths educators
- whoever thought teaching trinomials could lend itself
to problem solving and investigation.
Mathematics
website resources:
This page of websites has enough suggestions to last
you a while! Most of the sites have their own search
facilities, so you can look for the topic you need within
the site. Note: The resources and recommended
websites on the CD are all well worth investigating
(at leisure, when you have finished this module) and
can provide ideas and much material for your new approach
to Maths teaching.
In your e-diary, record your thoughts
on the layout and presentation of a unit of work.
