Reading group submissions: 1 hr
Preparing a portfolio folder: 15 mins

How successfully have I developed informatio skills in my past practice?

In the first activity of this module we will give you the opportunity to take stock of your current practice. The purpose of this activity is to give you a baseline against which you can compare future learning programmes that you develop. This is important because "through this process of conscious reflection on practice, some starting points for desirable personal change will emerge." (Head)

Training, Development and How Teachers Learn, written by Katie Head, co-author of Readings in Teacher Development 1997 (Heinemann).

Activity

Your e-diary is the document where you will make personal reflections. You are welcome to make initial comments about reflection on practice. Is this something you often do and how do you feel about looking honestly at your existing practice? Do you feel stale as an educator or are you still full of new ideas? If this is the first time that you are using the e-diary in this module click here to open the e-diary, save it to your personal folder after writing your comments.

Note: Your tutor will have indicated to you which format to use for your e-diary. The Word document linked above gives you the basic template for a reflective journal, but your tutor may require you to use another tool such as a blog to capture your reflections. If you are unsure, consult your tutor.

First read through the whole activity. Then proceed with step 1.
  1. During this module we focus on the information skills: collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information.
  2. Use this template to describe your existing practice.
  3. Use Section A to give an honest and simple account of any learning programme, project or unit of work that you have used with learners in the past year that has involved collecting, analysing, organising and critically evaluating information.

    or

Use Section B if you have never designed a learning programm, or unit of work that has involved collecting, analysing, organising and critically evaluating information.

  4. Save the completed template as Past_practice.

Note: It may be a good idea to create a portfolio folder on your workstation or in your network folder. Save files such as Past_practice in this folder. By the end of this module you will have a number of separate portfolio documents.

Use your e-diary to make closing comments about the activity.
