Activity 4A: Evaluating information: What is the purpose of the site?

1 hr

By doing this activity, you should see that identifying the purpose of a website can tell you how reliable the information is likely to be.

Before you do this activity, we suggest that you read a short article on Establishing the purpose of a site.

What is the purpose of the site?

Use your e-diary to make initial comments about evaluating information.
  1. Look at the following two sites below (click on the link) and answer the questions that follow:
Why do you think that this information was written and published? Is it meant to educate you, influence you, make you have strong feelings, or entertain you, or is there another purpose?
  2. Share the answers of Question 1 with your group by writing mail to the group. Discuss their answers with them.
Use your e-diary and, in one sentence, try to explain how you can evaluate information more easily once you know the purpose of the site.

Once you have completed the above activity, we suggest that you move on to Activity 4B - Evaluating information: credibility.
