READATHON

Since the school opened in 1993, most organisations have been approaching the school to join their different educational programmes.  Fortunately for us, READ also approached us, and all of us were very eager to have READ at our school.  In 1994 we started by including ten minutes before morning break on our time-table, and that we made sure that everyone is reading on that specific time.

In 1995 we  entered READ competition with grade 3 pupils, they were doing choral verse i.e. road safety.  The school managed to get READ gold certificate, and that is a school-asset.  You will always find it in the principal's office.

In 1996 we elected two teacher leaders i.e.  Mrs Plaatjie and Mr Ntshinqa.  Those two were responsible for all READ programmes and READ year- programme.  They go around all classrooms  and check if the bookcase is safe.

In September 1997 we actually invited the minister of environmental affairs, Mr Pallo Jordan, to celebrate with us Readathon-day.  We were so fortunate, because we had the community and the auditors.  It was a beautiful day when everybody listened to the minister reading a story.  Afterwards the minister planted a tree.  The grade two also read a book.

In 1998 grade two also got the certificate for participating in the READ programmes. And one from the staff member actually participated by telling a story.  And she came number two, winning a certificate.  And that has been the last READ occasion we had for the year.
