The problem
I like designing pinwheel toys. My pinwheel looks like this.

PinWheel.gif (2658 bytes)

How many of each kind of shape will it take to make a pinwheel toy for each person in the class. Write an order form so that you remember how many you need to buy.

Achievement Objectives
Number (Level 2)
- write and solve story problems which involve whole numbers, using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Mathematical Processes
- devise and use problem solving strategies (make a table)

Resources
mosaic shapes
Blackline master of problem (English)
Blackline master of the problem (Maaori)

Specific Learning Outcomes
The children will be able to:
- solve story problems using multiples of 2 and 3
- organise information into a table

Lesson Sequence

  1. Read the problem with the class (possibly creating the design with mosaic shapes)
  2. Explain to the children that they need to create an order form so that they know how many of each shape is needed.(You may need to explain what an order form is.)
  3. Have the children work in pairs to solve the problem. Circulate asking them how they are working out the number needed.
How did you figure it out?
What are you recording on your table?
  4. Share order forms.

Extension for early finishers
Design their own pinwheel and complete an order form for it.

Other contexts for the problem
Design for a t-shirt
