IslandQuest

Okinawans live longer than anyone else on earth. Why?
From May 23 to June 2, 2000, the Quest team of experts will take students on an expedition to Japan in an attempt to solve this mystery.
Our Grade 4s joined the team on their Quest and this is what they have to say:

The quest team of IslandQuest are trying to find out why people in Southern Japan live so long.  Do you know why people in Japan live so long?  I think it is because of their lifestyle and because they are so involved around nature. (Naledi)

They spend lots of time in their gardens.  (Alice)
They like jungle animals and different types of plants.  (Kerishke)

They eat very healthily.  They do not eat junk food at all.  They eat big amounts of vegetables and a small amount of oil.  They eat a lot of sea food.  (Sara)

Exercise also plays a big role in their lives.  Nakamura Zenei still fishes although he is 86 years old.  He does not use a boat with an engine but he uses a row boat.  This give him lots of exercise!   I enjoyed IslandQuest 2000 and I am looking forward to next year's Quest. (Pascale)

I'd like to live like that.  (Amy)

They are very religious and they love making music.  (Daniela)

The things that I enjoyed most were the Mystery Photos and Dan's Dilemma.  IslandQuest is a very fun Internet project and every day you learn something new and very interesting and not boring.  I learnt many things and one of them was that a turtle's heart beat can go as slow as one heartbeat per minute!  (Maashitoh)
