Activity 5-B3 - Adding actual expenditure to the budget spreadsheet

The purpose of this activity is to use the budget created in 5-B2 by putting in the actual amounts spent in January. The activity continues with the case study of Senzo and Mmaseten's monthly budget.

Adding actual expenditure to the budget spreadsheet
  1. At the end of January, Senzo and Mmaseten total up all the money they have spent.

Type in these amounts in the January column of the Budget spreadsheet that you created in Activity 2 (b).

Home Loan - 1200
Food - 997
Electricity - 349
Water - 0
Rates - 90
Telephone - 529
Housekeeping - 450
School Fees - 150
Motor Vehicle - 1300
Petrol - 839
Insurance - 250
Life Insurance - 500
Investments - 500
Medical - 340
Clothing - 120
Unforeseen expenses - 280

  1. You will notice that Senzo met with unforeseen expenses when his widowed mother was suddenly stranded in a far off town without transport. He had to buy a bus ticket for which he did not budget. Insert a row in the spreadsheet to allow for this item.

  2. Copy the formula in Cell B27 to C27. By how much has Senzo overspent his budget?

  3. When Senzo's mother sends him the receipt for the bus ticket a few days later he notices that she has received a 20% discount for being a pensioner. The unforeseen expense is actually R224. Correct the amount in the spreadsheet (change it from 280 to 224). What is Senzo's savings amount now? Notice how the savings amount in Row 27 has changed automatically.

Note: the currency symbol in this example is an R. This will differ for your country.

  4. Note: if you have not seen these changes take place in the totals, it may be because you have not made use of formulas. You must make use of formulas to calculate totals.
  5. Use the tips on
and make your spreadsheet look more attractive according to your preferences and needs.
