Tip Sheet

Microsoft Word 2007 - Insert a footnote

Citing sources

1. On the References menu, click Insert Footnote or Endnote.

By default, Word places footnotes at the end of each page and endnotes at the end of the document. You can change the placement of footnotes and endnotes by making a selection in the Footnotes.

2. If you want to change the format of the number then click the arrow in the Footnotes group (see circled below).

3. In the Number format box, click the format you want.

4. Click Insert.

Word inserts the note number and places the insertion point next to the note number. Type the note text.

5. Scroll to your place in the document and continue typing.

6. As you insert additional footnotes in the document, Word automatically applies the correct number format.
