Table 1: Displacement time
relationship
Processing the Data
- Re-open the spreadsheet called
'Ticker Timer Results' that you
worked on in the previous activity.
- Highlight the column of values
for time (B18 to B25)
- Hold down the Ctrl key and highlight
the column of numbers for total displacement (D18
to D25)
- Click on the chart
wizard button and use the XY (scatter) type
graph.
- Select each of the options you
want followed by next. Click finished to draw the
graph.
- Move the graph on your spreadsheet
so that you can see both the table and the graph.
- Read the tasks below. These can
be used with data like that in table 1 above. Try
them out with your learners when you get the opportunity.
- Plot a graph of displacement
(s) on the Y-axis, against time (t) on the X-axis.
Use the data in table 1.
- What is the shape of the
graph?
- What can you deduce from
this about the relationship between the displacement
and the elapsed time for the motion of the trolley?
- What is represented by
the gradient of the graph?
- Calculate the actual average
velocity of the trolley's motion from the graph.
