Activity

In this activity you will re-use the data presented below.

  t t s
s
0 0,00 0,00 0,00
1 0,20 0,20 0,32 0,32 1,60
2 0,40 0,20 0,65 0,33 1,65
3 0,60 0,20 0,97 0,32 1,60
4 0,80 0,20 1,28 0,31 1,55
5 1,00 0,20 1,60 0,32 1,60
6 1,20 0,20 1,91 0,31 1,55
7 1.40 0,20 2,24 0,33 1,65

Table 1: Displacement time relationship

Processing the Data

  1. Re-open the spreadsheet called 'Ticker Timer Results' that you worked on in the previous activity.
  2. Highlight the column of values for time (B18 to B25)
  3. Hold down the Ctrl key and highlight the column of numbers for total displacement (D18 to D25)
  4. Click on the chart wizard button and use the XY (scatter) type graph.
  5. Select each of the options you want followed by next. Click finished to draw the graph.
  6. Move the graph on your spreadsheet so that you can see both the table and the graph.
  1. Read the tasks below. These can be used with data like that in table 1 above. Try them out with your learners when you get the opportunity.
  • Plot a graph of displacement (s) on the Y-axis, against time (t) on the X-axis. Use the data in table 1.
  • What is the shape of the graph?
  • What can you deduce from this about the relationship between the displacement and the elapsed time for the motion of the trolley?
  • What is represented by the gradient of the graph?
  • Calculate the actual average velocity of the trolley's motion from the graph.
