Phases in planning revolutionary ICT change

The diagram in this resource shows the various steps through which you are (or will be) progressing. The right-hand side particularly shows the important role that the leader plays in this ICT change process. This module on Leadership stresses these processes and supports you through these steps. It also helps you to see where you are going. To get there you need to know your Vision and have a clear sense of Mission. You also need to know what kind of results you are looking to achieve. The left-hand side of this diagram highlights some of the behavioural results you can expect. Remember that change is a process. It takes time, commitment, buy-in, focus, exploration, continuous evaluation, adequate allocation of resources, dialogue and passion.

Identify in which stage your school is. Perhaps your school is straddling between one or two stages or showing characteristics from one or two different stages. Whatever the case, be specific and explain what is happening. Remember that a leader needs to know where the school is now, where the school wants to be and something of how the school is going to get there.

Make notes to yourself in your portfolio on the distinctions between these various stages. In each of these stages what might you expect from educators at the school?

Since ICTs at a school, by themselves, are not enough, the process of ICT integration should be accompanied by appropriate support to educators. How educators use ICTs in their everyday instructional practices will make all the difference in the classroom. Improving learner achievement and progress is a core aim of introducing ICT integration at a school (or in a District). Since it is the educator who structures the learning environment for learners, a key focus point of ICT integration is support to educators.

A key question to ask yourself is: what will we have to do in our school to take educators through the various stages of ICT use?

Certainly, different educators at your school will have different levels of familiarity with ICTs, so you will have to bear this in mind when responding to the following questions:

  • What will you do to support their initiatives?
  • What will you do to maximise their strengths and eliminate weaknesses in using ICTs for the classroom, in the classroom and outside the classroom?
