In Module Three you
will use INFORMATION ACCESS/SIRS,
largedatabases of magazine, journal, and newspaper articles.
Youmay find helpful information which will help you solve yourresearch problem.
They are on the GPISD Intranet. The following directions will help you navigate
your way through INFORMATION ACCESS/SIRS.
Getting to Know INFORMATION ACCESS/SIRS
1. Open Netscape Navigator
tothe GPISD home page by double-clicking on the Netscape icon. Be sure the
Location shows
http://200.200.210.14/.
If it shows www.gpisd.org., click
the Open box near the top ot
the screen. Type in
http://www.200.200.210.14.
2.
Click on the link for INFORMATION ACCESS/SIRS
ELEMENTARY.
.
3. Click in the
empty box and type in your search term. Then
click on Submit Search. (Your search
term is penguins.)
4. If you have
never used INFORMATION ACCESS/SIRS,
you
may
wish to stop and read the instructrions by clicking on Help.
5. Open the
articles you think will give you needed information
by clicking on View. Scan each article
to see if there are
answers
to any of the questions you have listed. To scan,
use your mouse and click on the arrow in
the bottom right
hand corner of the screen
that is pointing down. To move
back
to the top of an article, click on the arrow pointing up.
6. Highlight
the important facts by placing your cursor in front
of the first letter in the first word you
want to highlight.
Drag your cursor over
all of the words you need to highlight.
Go
to Edit. Click on Copy. Then open your ClarisWorks page
window. Be sure the cursor is blinking
where you want your
information
to be placed. Go to Edit again. Click on Paste.
There are two important things
toREMEMBER at this point:
1. You are “weeding out” your findings so that you are
only keeping the best and most relevant information.
2. You must cite your sources. Scan to the end of the
ar-
ticle and copy the Source to your note page after the
part of the article you have borrowed!
