Purpose
"Searching
and finding good information is a life skill - and an art."
Joyce
Kasman Valenza
If we equip students
with information literacy skills, they will be better able
to:
- Make up their own minds
- Work well in teams
- Solve problems with independence and ingenuity
- Speak, present, and write persuasively
The purpose of this module is to help you
find and use information on the World Wide Web. Sometimes
information on the Internet is poorly catalogued, so it isn't
as easy to find as you would find it in a library. We will
introduce you to tools that you can use to make searching
for information easier. It is possible for anyone to place
information on the Web. For this reason, you need to be able
to evaluate the information before using it. When you use
this information from the Web you need to indicate that it
is someone else's work.
The purpose of this module is not just about
finding and transferring information. You as
an educator need to be able to present challenging questions
and examine issues that can create a need for information
in learners. Your learners will be able to use information
sources to work with information and present their own original
ideas.
Outcomes
By the end of this module you should be
able to:
- Select and use appropriate tools
to find information on the World Wide Web
- Evaluate and compare sources of information
- Select and use information based on
defined needs
- Accurately reference sources of
information
- Design classroom activities that
promote the meaningful use of information
